Value Menu: Is it a Deal?

I am going to be a straight shooter. I love fast food. I used to eat fast food all the time when I worked at my old job. Its easy, convenient, and hey, it taste good right? I find fast food a cheap route and a fast way to get food because I like the fact that when I was late for work I can just rush, get some food, and go to work without worrying about being late. Plus, the prices on the value menus were amazing. I valued having fast food at my own convenience whenever I felt like buying it. It would usually be once a week and surprisingly enough I didn’t gain any weight (sorry folks).

Have you ever thought about a value meal? Seems to be strange to think about, but everyday on the week there is always something different every single day and its good for your buck. But the question is, what about your health? Seems obvious I know, but the food that you intake at a fast food restaurant is not doing any value for your body. Now take that same illustration and relate that to God. God wants the best for you, does he?

In Exodus 32, its the story of the Golden Calf. If you had not read the story or unfamiliar with it its basically people with the possessions that they had (i.e, jewels, earrings ect) and made a calf into it. Then, the people started worshipping it. Meanwhile, Moses was spending time with God and God was furious for what he has seen.

Exodus 32:9-10 And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people. Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, in order that I may make a great nation of you.”

Now, I don’t know about you but God does not mess around and God does not change His mind. If you were in that position of wrath upon “Moses people” (reason why I said that is because if you looked at the scripture, you will find that God disowns the people worshipping the calf in verse 7) would you be afraid? What would you do? Moses automatic response was to pray and God responds to prayer. Keep in mind, God is God and God does not change His mind, however God responds to prayer. That is when God showed the gracious side of Himself and He did not put wrath upon “Moses people.”

In the next few weeks I am going to talk about idolatry. I went up to a friend of mine and asked about a subject that I can write on. Pastor Timothy Keller stated this quote “Anything in your life that is so central to your life that you cant have a meaningful life if you lose it.” It could be anything at all. I am over the next few weeks going to break down many different idols that people face. Some idols that I see or some idols that I am experiencing for myself. I will therefore come to my Exodus 32 and wrap it up. I hope you are ready for future blogs that I do, because not only that I will have fun doing them but I really want to explore your ideas.

What is your idol?

Witnessing to Jesus

Have you ever thought on why you believe in Jesus? I have written a previous blog on why I did, why I chose Christ. But have you ever thought of the signs and wonders of Jesus, if that wasn’t evident in your life would you believe? Its a hard question to answer. A lot of people say (even me) I would still believe. If thats the case what is your testimony? What made you believe in Christ?

How I started to come to faith is that I first went to a rave and I did 3 pills of ecstasy. It was not in A: the right state of mind and B: I wasn’t going anywhere in my life. The day that I got baptized the first time is when my friend got into a fatal car accident by landing into a barbed wire fence. She was right near where I lived. That was my sign and miracle stating that it was me who could have been in that car. I could have died. Furthermore, I could have died without knowing Jesus. That was a sign for me that I needed to start living for God.

John 4:46-51 So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him,”Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. As he was going down, his servantst met him and told him that his son was recovering. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hourt the fever left him.” The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.

Not only that its biblical, everyone has a story on why they believe in Jesus. You can’t necessarily come to faith just by believing. I do think that there is a sign or wonder in your life that brings you to faith in trust in Jesus.

Name that particular event in your life that you came to Christ? How did Jesus become live to you?

You are Just A Man, Or Are You?

(Sorry girls)

Do we often feel as if we are someone superior? I do. I feel sometimes that titles in church give us that opportunity and that our narcissism can take over. I also feel sometimes that we would be able to take over, let people look at us other than serve. Some people can misinterpret us and see us as an idol if we are not too careful

I have done that as well. I tend to look at people and get super attached and if they leave I would fall on my face. Its a scary thing. I had to get an intervenes in my arm because of that. I was also talking to a girl yesterday in which her mom has died and she was looking for older females to try to make them apart of their lives. That is ok, its not ok when they leave they will have their face fall flat on the ground when they are gone. I helped her, and I feel that its good to help other people out. However, if I get a big head on helping her out then I am not really boasting on Jesus.

Dr. Timothy Keller said this that stuck in my mind (which includes people) an idol is when you have that particular thing in your life, if you lose it you would not have a meaningful one. His example that he used was thats why people wanted to kill themselves when going through an economic crisis. It was seen to them as the only security they have. One of my idols is being seen. I love attention and a lot of the times at home I never get it. So I look for it. Sometimes its an unhealthy way to look at yourself and to say “Hey!!! Look at me!!! This is what I done!!!” REMEMBER that you are just a man, (or woman) and you can’t do anything without Christ. Phillipians 4:13: “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” But what does that mean? What does “through Him mean?”

When you are in Gods presence, anything that you do that is for Him, could be absolutely anything. If you do it well, you need to A: Give God the glory and B: Be not ashamed of your Lord Jesus Christ. That is true freedom, to be in the presence of God and to put him in the forefront of whatever you do.

John 1:19-23 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

John is just a man. So are you (if your not a girl). The wilderness being everything around you. You are in the world, you are just a man but you are extraordinary once you have Christ Jesus in your life and you are not ashamed of His Gospel. John did that. He showed us in this passage that he isn’t anyone special, that he is just waiting for Jesus.

So I ask you, who are you? What is God doing extraordinary in your life?

Why Jesus?

As you can tell by maybe my posts or my twisted sense of humour in this photo, I am not your “typical Christian.” I like to make a joke out of everything but I like to take Jesus seriously. I find that true Christianity is a relationship with Jesus. I find it pretty awesome.

For this weeks challenge, its why do I pick Jesus. In high school, I remember taking a world religions class. I hated school, and I hated world religions. I hated religion. I never liked that I had to be reincarnated into a snail because I did drugs at the time or if I did well be reincarnated into another, more humble human. Don’t you think life is already hard enough for anyone to live back on this planet again?

I didn’t know why I chose Jesus and it didn’t make sense to me for a long time. I always heard the term “Being a Christian isn’t religion, but relationship.” So…to outside people what does that mean. I have a quote from Dr. Timothy Keller that cleared things up in my head. It says “The principle of religion is that I obey therefore I am accepted by God. The principle of Grace is I am accepted by God therefore I obey.” Its kind of stuck with me. It basically means that I don’t have to do anything.

Mark 12-29:31 states “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

I don’t perform for anyone. I don’t try and be something I am not. I try to love God the best that I can and love others. What you see from me is who I am. I try to be in Gods image the best that I can, but I don’t perform. The biggest reason why that I chose Jesus is because God loves me for me. He then knits me together because He wants me to grow, to learn, to learn from Him. I am pretty thankful that I know Him and I genuinely want the world to know Him too.

Finally, Jesus is the only one who has risen from the dead. That is enough to me stating that Jesus is God. If you look into any history of any religion, Jesus is the only supernatural thing on the face of this planet that is able to rise from the dead. He has risen, and so I should follow. I encourage anyone to be a Christian. You won’t regret it.

Salvation Story

Coming from a home where you have no father is hard. Coming from a standpoint where you don’t know who you are or why you seem that you don’t exist is even harder. I was that person. Sometimes, I still am. Its a very upsetting place in which you don’t have a male role model in your life.

Before we get any further let me tell you a little bit about me. My name is Matt. I now live in a small town in Canada. My mom was seventeen when she had me and she struggled a lot to keep me. I grew up poor, not having much just because my mom had to take care of me. It was hard.

I grew up not having much, I was influenced in with some people that have a similar story to me. I used to hang out with really messed up people. I had one friend who got stabbed nine times, had another friend who overdosed on oxy contins, and had another hold a knife to my throat. I still look back saying “hey that could be me. I could be dead.” By the grace of God I am not.

I used to do a lot of parties. I tried ecstasy once. I remember being up for thirty six hours straight and being in the streets of Toronto without any sleep. I even remember me going on the streets of downtown Toronto going into clubs and partying. I was in the scariest place possible and I didn’t know what to do or how to stop it. It felt good, but I knew I didn’t want to stay there.

I went to a place called the Recreation Outreach Center (The ROC) where I was first experienced with a friend named Troy. The ROC basically placed teens in where they all can hang out and have fun. It was a way to get kids off the streets. That is where I had my life changed. God in Troy was leading me to the gospel. I was understanding a little piece of what I was trying to find and was really getting interested in what Troy was showing me. I was baptized on November 11th (will never forget that day) in which one of my friends was in a fatal car accident. I could have easily been in that car. However, while I am still missing her I am so thankful that I am alive today. Only by the grace of God that I am still here.

At the beginning of my post, it was read that I didn’t have a dad. I still don’t, but I have a Father. I encourage everyone to follow Jesus, for He is the way, truth, and the life.

Wretched Man

Have you ever felt that you do more talking? Have you ever noticed that people had some sort of non loving features about them? I feel that. And I am guilty just as anyone else. I probably can say a lot of things about someone, or I can say a lot about helping others that I forget why I am doing it for. I was performing a religion, trying to do an act to please God. Not thinking of grace I am going against a lot of people, mainly God. Sure, points that I have were validated, but that doesn’t mean I rant about it.

So guess what, I am not good enough for God

Romans 7:21-25 says: So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in Gods law, but I see another law at work in the members of my body, wagering in war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God-through Jesus Christ our Lord!

See the big issue is this, I fight sin (or try to) and because the speck in my eye (Matthew 7) I see others flaws than my own. I don’t see that I can divide more than I can multiply, I don’t love the way Jesus loves…just because I don’t have a window of opportunity open. I even step on toes and bash people when I don’t need to (unintentionally). The biggest thing to do is to help other people. Be open, be around, and be loving. I need to do that more often and so does the next guy

Look around, there is people around you, there is people on twitter that follow you who need help and that are looking. You ignore them, and pretend they aren’t there. There is a homeless guy that you walk by every day or there is someone in your church that is wanting to know God and they need help and someone to teach them. Be that window of opportunity.

The biggest thing to everyone is that Jesus is Lord and he saves. If I can get saved, so can you. THIS IS A COMMUNITY WHO NEEDS OTHERS! So lets be that window and love a little more. More mouth closed and more opening ears and listen. Lets tell the world about Jesus

What can you do better to help? I am closing with a song Monk and Neagle – The Twenty First Time

Are We A Body or Are We A Team

If anyone knows or watches the NBA you would know that the Miami Heat is probably the most hated team in the NBA. There was tons of controversy between these guys, mainly because of number 6 (Lebron James) leaving Cleveland. Since that was Lebrons hometown and his fans were loyal to him, they were upset he wanted to get traded just because of money and not dedication to a team that he was to lead. It isn’t about the sport anymore and its about the money.

I have had thoughts about something ever since I started twitter. Everyone has it in their bios and it just turned into a big fad. Do you notice that Christians (especially the younger generation) has put #TeamJesus, #TeamSaved, #TeamHoly (which I don’t know how that works) #TeamiPhone (which as far as I am concerned has nothing to do with the Christian faith) #Teamlightskin #TeamDarkskin. Is this how we define ourselves?

At the top of the post, I have mentioned “It isn’t about the sport anymore and its all about the money.” Well, my point is that it isn’t about the team anymore, its about the hashtag. Does that make you Christian? Maybe I am being too literal but I don’t need to validate my salvation with a hashtag.

Here are some thoughts about teams:

– Teams have certain members in which they are better than others

– Teams are traded

– Some members in a team are clicky

– Too much dependence on one player

– No leader and the team crumbles

– No defence

– No offense

– No framework

– No plan

Sure a coach can be provided, but that doesn’t mean that these people can work together. Another point that I had about a team is that a team gets traded and separated. We can not separate ourselves from God himself and we can not separate ourselves from people but if we do, we aren’t doing the will of God. Does everyone on #TeamJesus get the same response? Is it a click? Are clicks Christian?

Lets go back to #TeamJesus and relate the topics listed above:

– Certain members of #TeamJesus get more recognition or outshine others

– Again, mentioning the clicks in #TeamJesus

– No theology in #TeamJesus

– Religious mindset in #TeamJesus

– #TeamJesus is altogether cliche

I prefer being in the body instead of being apart of a team. Being the body means that you are never separated. Sometimes being in the body some parts may not work, can be disfunctional, and may even not work as well as it should, but altogether its for one purpose. Full inclusion of everyone and for God Himself. (well, really two)

1 Corinthians 12:15-18 says: Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

That is my goal, this is the reason why I don’t like #TeamJesus. Maybe I am too literal, or maybe I am not seeing it the way that I should, but altogether we need to do a better job being the body. My final point is that #TeamJesus is an exclusion of that. So I encourage you to pray on that, to listen and to fully grasp and understand my point of view in this blog and I appreciate comments too. Thank you in advance for reading.
